Join Pinellas NOW (National Organization for Women) for a free community viewing of the film, “Hidden Figures” (rated PG) that illustrates the rampant, albeit accepted, racism and sexism in the 1960s. Following, there will be a poignant discussion and brainstorming to address/combat these ever-present issues.
As this is a community event, we look forward to welcoming folks from all over the area to watch a stellar film about three female African American mathematicians working at NASA who fought adversity to achieve their goals. As their illustrious efforts resonate into our daily lives as impetuses for social justice, let us gather together to make change in our community and fight for equality. Aligning with NOW’s advocacy, the purpose of this event is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all folks.
Our discussion after the film will be lead by Gwen Reese. She was a guest speaker at a general NOW meeting; her suggestions of how to be an ally spurred the subcommitee that spearheaded this event. We hope that together, as a community, we can unite and plan actions for social justice. Gwen Reese will also be our guide at an upcoming African American Heritage Trail on November 11th at 10AM. Please check with Pinellas County NOW for more information.
